Our Origin Story

The brainchild of not one, not two, but three organizations in the red dot island of Singapore, ThreatMirror has its roots planted firmly in the intersection of government agencies, research institutes, and educational institutes. Started in 2023 under a 2-year research grant funded by the Cyber Security of Agency, the project aimed to solve the problems faced by security architects in the Government Technology Agency of Singapore (GovTech). With a lean team of four developers and two principal investigators divided between the Illinois Advanced Research Center of Singapore Ltd. (Illinois ARCS) and Singapore University of Technology and Design (SUTD), the concept of ThreatMirror was slowly brought into focus.

Reflecting the challenges faced by GovTech’s security architect teams, the product concentrated its sights on (1) improving the threat modelling process by automating the existing human-driven workflows, (2) revamping the conceptual framework by moving to attack paths instead of compliance-driven checklists, and (3) enhancing the risk-driven mitigation planning by analysing the attack paths across the whole system.
